Our No-Spend Lent kind of got turned on its head when we lost my grandfather the day I started. I did well for Wednesday through Friday, then next thing I knew, we were spending hundreds of dollars in hotel stays, gas, funeral attire for quickly growing children, and meals out because I didn’t have time to prep meals to bring… and now we have spoiled food in the fridge that was planned for meals in the time we were away.
What a start!
Now that we are home, I’m back to my commitment to avoid spending. Add in the stomach virus that started the day of our return, and I don’t even feel the temptation to buy junk. I have done well at avoiding the typical shopping temptations. I truly think that the “unsubscribe” option has been my biggest help because so many shops I enjoy, but don’t need to buy from, send me multiple emails daily. It is a lot of work upfront to unsubscribe from an embarrassing number of emails, but it seems to be paying off now.
All in all, I think I am doing well at staying on top of the budget and ensuring that I avoid excess spending (I even declined Chris’s offer to get coffee from my favorite coffee shop!)
How is it going for you? Did you have any unexpected challenges arise? Have there been any surprise blessings?
I plan to keep updating each week and hope to hear from readers in the comments about your progress.
